15 common mistakes during moving you should avoid (and how to do it right)

When I first moved out of my parents’ house into my own place, I thought I had it all figured out. I bought a few boxes, grabbed some tape, and figured I’d just pack everything the night before the truck came. Of course, that turned into pure chaos. I ended up stuffing random things together, like shoes with kitchen utensils, just to get it done.

I can relate to that more than I’d like to admit. My worst move was when I tried to save money by doing everything myself and underestimated how much stuff I actually had. I didn’t declutter before packing, so I ended up paying more because the truck was fuller and heavier than expected. Later I found out that’s one of the classic common moving mistakes, and honestly it makes sense. It’s not just about money either — hauling around junk you don’t even need makes the whole process longer and more stressful. Another mistake I’ve made is not protecting fragile items properly. I once tossed a bunch of glasses in a box with just a towel on top, and of course half of them shattered. Now I wrap every single dish and glass individually, even if it feels like overkill. I also learned the hard way about not labeling boxes on multiple sides. When movers stack them high, you can’t see what’s in anything unless it’s marked clearly. And don’t forget about your essentials bag — that’s one I only started doing recently. Having clothes, toiletries, meds, and phone chargers in one easy-to-grab bag makes a massive difference, especially when you’re exhausted and don’t want to dig through twenty boxes at midnight. For me, reading about moving tips and seeing how many people made the same errors helped me catch them before they happened again. It’s funny how the list of common moving mistakes looks obvious when you read it, but in the middle of packing, your brain just goes blank. Planning ahead really is the only way to keep the day from turning into a total mess.
