Key responsibilities when caring for aging parents or relatives

I’ve recently started helping take care of my aunt, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t realize how many different responsibilities come with it. It’s not just doctor visits or groceries, but also checking in emotionally, making sure paperwork is handled, and respecting her independence at the same time. Some days it feels manageable, other days it’s overwhelming. For those who’ve been doing this longer, what do you see as the most important responsibilities to focus on without burning yourself out?

I’ve been caring for my dad for a few years now, and what I’ve learned is that it’s a balance between practical tasks and emotional support. Yes, things like health appointments, medications, and finances matter, but so does listening and letting them feel involved in decisions. Once I stopped trying to control everything and focused on consistency, it became easier for both of us.
